Daenerys’ Qarth Dress & Comic Con Paris 2013

So, for the past few months, I’ve been working on a special project : a costume for Paris’ Comic Con which took place last week. From the beginning I wanted to cosplay as Daenerys, since it was my first CC and first cosplay. I sketched the costume and made it myself from scratch, it was really fun ! Now, I’m going to detail the making of my Qarth Dress and show you the result :)

Daenerys Targaryen’s Qarth Dress (yes, the blue one)

qarth dress

THE dress

I used :
- blue fabric, very light and a bit transparent
- blue fabric, solid.
- gold fabric paint
- acrylic paint (gold too)
- craft foam (it must bend easily as it will be used for the belt and the shoulder pieces)
- light blue and invisible thread
- a light blonde wig
- a dragon ! I used my friend’s figurine of the Great Dragon from Merlin (BBC).

A lot of work !

First, I sketched the dress. I actually made a top and a long skirt separately, which was easier. You’ll also need to cut fabric for the “cape”. I fist made the skirt – that was the easy part. Then I made the top. It was trickier as I had to make it a bit open in the front, but not too much either. I then used a craft sponge to stain the fabric with golden fabric paint.

Next came the making of the foam parts. I’m very grateful to Kudrel-Cosplay for sharing a very good pattern for the belt. I cut the pattern in two and printed it on simple paper. Cutting the holes is fastidious, but it must be done !

Cutting the little holes

Then I taped it on my craft foam sheets with washi tape (in order not to tear the paper when I removed the tape) and traced the holes with a thin and pointy black marker (a Sakura 0.02).

qarth belt

When I took off the pattern, I just used my X-acto to cut the wholes. I then proceeded to paint the two parts of the belt with acrylic golden paint.

qarth belt

I used a paint brush for the first coat, and then a little craft sponge to give it some volume.

2nd coat of paint

For the shoulder pieces, I cut two rectangles (mesure your shoulders first) and used the belt pattern to trace holes, and repeated the painting steps.

qarth belt

The shoulder pieces

To assemble the two parts of the belt, and the shoulder pieces to the cape and top, I used “invisible” thread. It’s very thin and obviously almost invisible to the eye. I made holes in the back of the belt and put in a golden rope from my scrapbooking stash ^^

qarth belt

The belt : finished !

That’s pretty much everything, don’t hesitate to ask questions, and I hope you’ll enjoy the advice and pics :)

Me as Daenerys :)

Harry Potter Mini Album

Last week-end I managed to finish my big Harry Potter project, a mini album with photos of my trip to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London. The story is one of destiny (way to be dramatic, uh ?), as I was supposed to go to Bath that day, but the Jane Austen Centre was closed so we chosed to go to the Studios instead. My friend Filipa and I are huge fans of HP and we were really excited. The good thing is that you’re allowed to take pictures and even encouraged to do so ! Enough blabber, here come the pics & details ;)

Game of Thrones Table Decor

Hello everyone ! So, last sunday was my birthday, and at the last minute we decided to do a Game of Thrones decor for the table. We didn’t have much time to gather supplies or many ideas, so what I’m going to show you can qualify as “last minute“, and it’s also pretty easy to accomplish for any Game of Thrones viewing party :)

Game of Thrones table decor

Game of Thrones table decor – Winter is coming !

What you need :
- an old tablecloth, beige or grey, or at least in a color light enough for the map to stand out
- a black or brown Sharpie pen
- a map of Westeros (or any other map, if you want to do a medieval theme)
- little chocolate eggs
- cardstock for the dragon tray
- silverware (or any tableware that goes with the theme)
- wooden or plastic sticks, cardstock & a printer for the sigils

>> So first, my mom gave me this old grey tablecloth. I opened a detailed map of Westeros on my iPad and got to work with a pencil. The first thing to do is to choose the area where the map will be drawn. I chose not to use the whole tablecloth, because the sides would not be seen anyway. I didn’t have much time so it was not a very close rendition of the map, but still close enough : I draw squares on my tablecloth and on the map picture to help me with the scale. Then I got to drawing with a basic pencil with the help of my sister to finish faster :p). You just have to follow the pencil lines with your sharpie, and voilà ! This is how it looks like when you’re done with it :

This is rather cool, but not enough. My favourite character is Daenerys Targaryen, so I thought of a couple of things that could go well with a table decor. First, I designed some kind of tray with Silhouette Studio, using a dragon design I had downloaded in the past. I cut it in red cardstock and put little black rhinestones for the eyes, and a little silver thread between the two dragons to make it look like a carriage of some kind. This little dragon tray was destined to hold salt & pepper bottles I already had. To complete the dragon theme, I added little easter chocolate eggs I bought at Hema.

I then decided to print little sigils for the food. I glued them on little sticks and also on bigger plastic sticks. The silver sticks are actually magic wands I bought at Hema (like 1,50€ for 8 wands). I wanted to put them in the glasses, to help everyone remember their drink (each had a different house), but it didn’t look nice, so I put them on the napkins instead. (You will find a link to the printable sigils at the end of the post). I also designed simple coasters with the Targaryen sigil, to put under my transparent glasses (file also available at the end).

Finally, I had some sigils left, so they went on my birthday tart (how cool is that ? A bit tired of chocolate cake ? Ask your mom for a delicious homemade tarte normande <3). I also had these totally awesome roman numbers candles, hiding in a cupboard. So I thought “hey, I’m getting old, so let’s use some old numbers” ^^ And it looked really cool !

❄ A Very Potter-y Christmas ❄

It’s that time of the year ! For a few years now, we’ve decided to decorate our christmas tree according to a theme. We’ve had a “geeky” tree, an Irish tree, a Venitian one etc. And this year’s theme is…. *drumroll* … Harry Potter ! My little sister and I are die-hard fans of the Harry Potter franchise, so we had a lot of fun decorating the tree with Gryffindor colors (my sister’s house. I’m a slytherin, but green and silver are not very “homey” colours), stuff we bought and also trinkets from our own personal collections :) Here are some pictures, without  delay !

❄ Harry Potter Xmas Tree – Full view ❄

I made the tree topper myself. It’s the Sorting Hat. I used some black cardstock for the cone, cereal box cardstock for the base, a very old shirt of my dad’s, my hot glue gun and acrylic paint I found in my paint stash. First you have to make the “hat” base, you can use stapples to attach the cone to the base of the hat. Then you start glueing the fabric piece with the glue gun. I tried to replicate the creases and shadows of the actual Sorting Hat, but if you have difficulty doing so, you can always recreate the details with different shades of paint. Once it’s all set, you can paint it with regular acrylic paint, it will harden it a bit – and that’s what we want. I used black paint mixed with water to darken the “eyes” and “mouth” of the hat, so it would’nt stand out to much, but still be darker than the rest of the hat.

I also made a very simple Weasley jumper, with a “R” like Ron (we all know Ron’s the best ^^). I just cut a piece of dark red felt in the shape of a sweater, hot glued little bits at the end of the sleeves and added a R sticker from my scrapbooking stash :) Other than that, I added little parchment rolls, miniature brooms, various horcruxes, keyrings, toys etc. I already owned. We even added a christmas sock for Dobby ;) I also made little lightnings and the deathly hallows symbol with my Silhouette, you’ll find a link to the free files at the end of the article ;)

Création & Savoir-faire Expo 2012

This year’s “Création & Savoir-Faire” Expo was held this week in Paris (Porte de Versailles, Nov. 21-25). I was lucky enough to win free tickets through a Pinterest contest, and I went on friday (11/23). The thing about the expo (and other crafts expos) is not the good deals you might get, but rather the choice of products. Many of the brands and companies on site offer higher prices than usual, so you really have to focus on buying the stuff you won’t find anywhere else.

The specialty of CSF is the “Inspiration Alley”. Each year, they gather creative people (mainly craft bloggers and brands) around a theme, and every one of them has to imagine a little world in the space they’re given. This year’s theme was Boheme, so many of theme went with a circus theme. Some of them were very inspirational, some not so much. Here are some photos I’ve taken !

Mustache Lightbulb

So my mom’s kitchen theme is “British Pub“. We’ve added stuff from various places in London, like flags, pub towels, pub signs etc. We’ve also bought a lamp shaped like a bowler hat, but we wanted to improve it a bit, so the big lightbulb wouldn’t outshine the lamp itself. We decided to add a mustache to the lightbulb, so now it kinda looks like an english lamp-man :p As to how we did it, I cut a mustache shape in some black duct tape with my Silhouette Cameo, and voilà !

What do you think ? You could also do it with orange duct tape to make a redhead ! (cause redheads are awesome)(says the redheaded girl)

Chinatown

Hello ! Today is about Chinatown ! I’m going to show you two projects related to two different Chinatowns, in Washington DC and London (UK). You’ll find that I absolutely adore my Silhouette Cameo, and that I created two files, one for each layout. You will find links to download them at the end of tis post.

First, the American Chinatown. I didn’t have much time to visit Chinatown, most of my time was taken by the museum of the area, especially the Smithsonian, although my favorite one was the Crime & Punishment Museum ♥. But I took pictures ! For this layout, I used part of Graphic 45 beautiful asian collection “Bird Song”. It’s very detailed and you can see there is great thought behind the design. I ordered the papers specifically for these two layouts (I don’t know what else I could do with asian stuff anyway  :p )

Now this is a the british Chinatown in London. I had the chance to go back there last september, and this time  I took pictures of the Chinatown ;)

Harry Potter Gift Pack

So a while back, I had to prepare a gift for my friend’s birthday. At first, I was only planning on giving her stuff related to London, in preparation of our trip later that year. Then I stumbled upon a very good tutorial on how to make your own Hogwarts acceptance letter. Then I remembered the mold I bought a few months ago, and it all clicked into place :) My friend was very happy to open her “HP Pack”, so here are the content list, some pics and links to help you make your own :)

Harry Potter Gift Pack (back to school theme)

- Hogwarts acceptance letter, complete with school supplies list and letter from Percy Weasley [here]
- A box of ChocoFrogs : you can make the box yourself, there are a lot of printable ones on the internet.
- A personnalized “Famous Wizard Card” (I made one with a picture of my friend and a made up biography on the back)
- Pins related to HP. I don’t have pictures, but I used a machine to make Prefect, WWW and other kinds of pins.
- Bertie Botts Beans : you can either get the official ones from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Florida) or use basic candy beans.

So, in this precise case, my frog mold was designed to make big frogs, the exact same size as the ones sold in Florida. So when I put together the chocofrog box, it was to small to receive more than one frog. So I put the pins in the box instead, and created a new box for the frogs. I bought a golden chocolate box, put my six frogs (3 milk chocolate, 3 white chocolate) and then decorated the box with a HoneyDukes gift tag and some pink and green ribbon.

The custom “Famous Wizard Card” (my friend and I study anthropology, hence the weird biography on the back :p).

Et voilà ! Please send me pics of your cards and frogs :)
